Savannah, GA Sports Teams
You’ve made the cross-country move to Savannah and you’re ready to dive into the local sports scene. Who should you cheer for?
Because your new home lies four hours from Atlanta – depending on I-75 traffic – you’ll find that Savannah, like most of Georgia, is Braves country. You’ll also find your neighbors rooting for the Falcons and Hawks, not that either franchise has given the Southeast much to cheer about.
On the college scene, you’re about the same distance from Columbia, S.C. – home of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks – and Athens, Ga., home of the Georgia Bulldogs. The choice here is clear: Go Dawgs!
You won’t need to leave town to find a pro or college team worth following. Savannah is home to the most colorful team in minor league baseball – the Savannah Bananas – as well as the Tigers of Savannah State University. You’ll be able to find any of these teams represented at Savannah sports stores.
And if you’re into golf, well, there’s a gorgeous course you may have heard of just a couple hours up the road in Augusta.
Amateur Sports Teams in Georgia State
The Savannah State Tigers play at the Division II level in most sports, but have moved up to the Football Championship Subdivision in football. Their most notable alumnus is Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe.
If you’re looking for a Division I program to adopt, look no further than the Georgia Bulldogs. The Dawgs are the defending national football champions. Fielding teams in 19 sports, Georgia has won a combined 47 national championships.
Georgia Tech is another option, as it’s located in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets field 15 teams in NCAA Division I play. Known as the “Ramblin’ Wreck,” Georgia Tech has enjoyed success in football, baseball, and men and women’s basketball.
College players from around the country populate the roster of the Savannah Bananas, a summer league team that dubs itself a “world famous baseball circus.” On-field shenanigans and viral videos have made the team a national sensation and help the Bananas sell out every game at Grayson Stadium—their Savannah stadium. The Savannah Bananas location is always the place for a good time!
