Change the locks
You will never know for certain who has held copies of the house keys. It is essential to change all the exterior locks immediately, preferably on the day of your move. You may want to consider electronic door locks – each person who needs access to your home will have their own entry code.
Get an alarm system
If you’ve inherited a security alarm make sure you get the code number and the operation manual from the sellers so you can operate it and then change the PIN. Contact the alarm company to arrange transfer of ownership or rental agreement and notify the local authority about changes to keyholders.
If your new home doesn’t have a security alarm or it needs replacing consider having one installed. Installing an alarm system is one of the best ways to secure your home.
Hide the fact that you’ve just moved in
Hang curtains or blinds as soon as possible, don’t leave packing boxes in open view and introduce yourself to the neighbors.
Take a look outside
You want to evaluate the outside of your home. Do you have adequate lighting? Installing outside lighting such as a motion sensor floodlight or infrared detectors that automatically turn on when someone is in the area are an effective deterrent.
