Moving – How To Get Large Furniture Pieces Through The Door

moving large furnitureWhen you’re preparing for a move, you may be concerned about how you’ll get your large furniture pieces into your new home.  Wrestling with a large piece of furniture that doesn’t seem to want to fit through the door can be incredibly frustrating. With many years of experience, our professional movers have encountered and resolved this type of problem many times, but if you’re a DIY’er , you should keep these tips in mind.

Take Measurements Before You Move

You will want to take measurements of your doorways, stairways and hallways and compare these measurements to the furniture you own so you will know how much space you have.

Use Different Angles

No matter how well prepared you may be, surprises can still happen. If you find that a piece of furniture doesn’t fit even though your calculations tell you it should, there are still some things you can do.

  • If a furniture piece doesn’t fit at first, experiment with different angles. Be careful as you near the door frame; you don’t want to cause any damage to it or your furniture.
  • Look for alternative entry points. If the furniture is going on the bottom level, a porch door or large window might provide a wider space to transfer the furniture.

Disassemble the Door Frame and/or the Furniture

Sometimes, you need to get a little creative when it comes to finding ways to get larger pieces of furniture into the house.

  • Remove the door from its hinges to create that little bit of extra space you need. Be sure to keep all brackets, screws and other hardware in a clear bag so you don’t lose any important parts.
  • Unscrewing the legs off of a couch or chair can gain you valuable inches.  If you choose this option, don’t forget to take a picture so you know how it is supposed to be reassembled.
