After The Move – Tips On Unpacking

Unpacking after the moveMoving day is over and now it’s time to unpack and get your house in order. It can be overwhelming knowing where to start once the movers dump all your boxes into your new home.  The quickest way to make your new house feel like a home, is to get it set it up.  Here are a few tips on how to unpack and get your house in order after a the move.

Keep your cleaning supplies in a box that you can unpack first.

You will want to have this box available so you can clean as you go.

Make sure the right boxes get into the right room.

When packing, label each box with its contents and the room where the movers should place them at your new home.

Have an idea where certain furniture will go.

You’ll be able to direct the movers as to where your bed, couch, and other larger pieces will be placed, saving you from having to drag them into those positions later.

Focus on one room at a time.

Prioritize before the move what you will do first. Opening moving boxes haphazardly from one room to another can very quickly become overwhelming. Start in one room and unpack everything in that room before moving onto another room.

Where to start?

The bedroom? Because at the end of a long day of unpacking, having a bed with clean sheets to collapse into can be a godsend. The kitchen? As the heart of the home it will serve as a refuge to gather and refuel when the rest of the place is in disarray.  The bathroom? Maybe it’s a hot shower and a bit of pampering that you crave most at the end of a busy day of moving and unpacking.  This is all a personal preference.  Start in the room that will provide the most comfort for you and your family.

Personal Touches

One of the easiest ways to make your new space more familiar is by putting small touches of “home” into each room.  So go ahead and hang that favorite photo when you come across it while unpacking rather than putting it aside to do later.

You don’t have to unpack everything the first day.  Getting settled in after moving takes time.  Once your house is in order, take time to explore your new community.
